The latest news on ERA-GLONASS, ITS for Moscow and Sochi 2014

ERA GLONASS: project launch
ERA GLONASS (the emergency help system on the roads based on the use of Russian navigation system GLONASS) is to be implemented starting from 2011. The goal of the project is to decrease the level of deaths and accidents on the roads. It is required that GLONASS is compatible with the standards being developed in Europe for the eCall initiative, in order to ensure that the emergency help system would work throughout the territory of both Russia and Europe. There are already some pilot projects in action, including the implementation of the GLONASS-based navigation equipment for the logistics management in Sochi and traffic information system for Moscow region implemented on public transport.

ITS for Moscow: project approval stage
Moscow with over 13 million citizens and over 3.3 million vehicles is one of the biggest cities in the world. The road network is however underdeveloped comparing to the biggest capitals in Europe, Asia and America. This concerns not only the quantity but the quality of the roads, traffic management and road infrastructure development. For this reason the ITS for Moscow project was initiated.
The concept and feasibility study of the project will look into the modernisation and enlargement of the existing ITS services with their integration in the unique centralised dispatching, information and control centre. The project is at the final stage of approval and the implementation is previewed for 2011-2014.

ITS for Sochi: Summer Olympics 2014
Sochi will receive the Olympic Games in 2014 and the construction works are on the move. The creation of the infrastructure for the event requires the modernisation of the city road network and ITS services, the roads connecting the main logistics centres such as the airport, seaports and train stations with the Olympic facilities to be used during the Games. On the other hand, the construction process itself is very complicated and involves around 3,000 vehicles that provide the cargo transportation. Both these tasks are being solved through the use of ITS to manage the logistics on the construction stage and during and after the Olympic Games. Today the monitoring and control system on the base of GLONASS navigation system is being implemented. At the same time such services as integrated payment collection system and navigation infrastructure are being developed.
