Russia looking into eCall (ERA-GLONASS) legislation

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin believes that all cars produced in Russia should be equipped with the GLONASS global satellite navigation system as of 2012.

An emergency service telephone number, “112”, will be introduced as part of the GLONASS project, Putin said at a meeting on GlONASS on Tuesday, RIA Novosti reports.

“As a logical continuation of this project, an emergency reaction system for road accidents, ERA-GLONASS, is being formed. The aim of these systems is to minimize the time needed to help those in trouble. ERA-GLONASS is due to cover the entire territory by 2014. Starting from 2012, all new cars could have built-in [GLONASS] systems in order to increase road safety in Russia,” the premier said.
